Sharpening your Listening Skills for Spiritual Direction

First published on: 9th February 2018

Cenacle Sister, Sr Winifred Morley has joined the Liverpool Diocese Spiritual Direction team. The Sisters’ mission is based around: “Awakening and deepening faith with the people of our time” through the various ministries of Retreats, Spiritual Direction, Adult Formation, Pastoral Care and Young Adults.

Sr Winnie is organising three Cenacle Days this year. She’s encouraging our Diocesan Spiritual Directors to come along. The first of which is 'Sharpening My Listening Skills' on March 3rd. For this Cenacle Day and the two others, you'll find details in the side boxes.

Based in Liverpool, Sr Winnie explains her Spiritual Direction journey to us.

How long have you been a Spiritual Director?
“I have been a Spiritual Director for over 35 years and for many of them involved in training others in the art. Having moved to Liverpool a few years ago it was an honour to be asked to join the training and then the core team in the Diocese. It helps keep me rooted in deepening my own relationship with God and fills me with awe as I journey alongside others. How good, gentle and loving is our God, who is respectful of our individuality and gifts us as God knows we have need.”

What you believe is the importance of Spiritual Direction?
“I feel it a very special privileged role to be a Spiritual Director. Walking alongside another person and together listening for God's interaction can be both humbling and awesome. Knowing how much it helps me discern God's plan in my own life I delight in enabling another to find their path.”

What would you say to someone who’s contemplating becoming a Spiritual Director, if they feel unsure about taking the next step
“If you are thinking of becoming a Spiritual Director then ask yourself - am I serious about deepening my own relationship with God? Do others share something of their journey with me? Do I have the ability to listen nonjudgmentally as others share their journey with me? If you answer is yes each time, then why not discern further by seeking training.”
