The Bishop of Liverpool, The Rt Revd Dr John Perumbalath is delighted to announce the appointment of the Revd Dr Miranda Threlfall-Holmes as the Archdeacon of Liverpool.

Miranda came to our diocese six years ago to be Rector of the St Luke in the City team in the heart of Liverpool, having previously served in the Dioceses of Durham and Newcastle as a parish priest, a university chaplain and Area Dean of Durham. Miranda is also a historian interested in how through understanding the development of church doctrine and practice we can comprehend contemporary concerns. She is the author of a number of well received books including her most recent ‘How To Eat Bread: 21 Nourishing Ways to Read the Bible’.  Miranda serves on General Synod, and was particularly involved in the debates surrounding women bishops. She is interested in broad issues relating to diversity in the church, and in the theology of difference.

Bishop John said, “The Archdeacon’s role is hugely important in the mission and ministry of our church and I am delighted that Miranda has accepted the role of Archdeacon of Liverpool. Miranda was the unanimous choice of the selection panel who deliberated from a strong field of candidates. Her appointment is testament to her vision and commitment to the role of Archdeacon and the drive she has shown in the last few months as she acted into this role. Miranda brings a wealth of ministerial experience from our diocese and the wider church which will be invaluable in this role. She has a real sense of God’s call upon her to embrace this role, and is deeply committed to supporting our clergy, congregations and communities. My prayers are with her as she develops her ministry over the next few months and years.”

Accepting the appointment, Miranda said, “‘I am honoured and delighted to be appointed as the next Archdeacon of Liverpool. My family and I moved to Liverpool six years ago and absolutely love living and working here in this fabulous city and diocese. Over the last few months while I’ve been seconded as Acting Archdeacon I’ve felt a huge sense of rightness in this role, and a real sense of homecoming in working as a team with my fellow archdeacons, our two bishops, and all our clergy, laity and St James House staff.  I love the holistic focus of our diocesan vision as it holds together our twin aspirations for more people knowing Jesus, and more justice in the world. While it will be a wrench to leave my current wonderful parish, it’s a real joy to be able to continue serving the people of Liverpool in this new role.’

Miranda will be collated in a service at Liverpool Cathedral on 9th September 2023. You will all be welcome there.
