Bishop Paul becomes a member of the House of Lords

Bishop Paul and Bishop Robert Atwell the Bishop of Exeter were introduced to the upper chamber in a short ceremony where they swore the oath of allegiance to the Queen.

The pair join the lords spiritual who have 26 places reserved in the unelected house for senior Church of England bishops, including the Archbishops of Canterbury and York.

Bishop Paul said “It’s a great privilege to become a member of the House of Lords in these final months of my active ministry in Liverpool. Like my predecessors I hope to contribute on behalf of the city, the region and the towns and villages of the Diocese. Much of the work of the Lords takes place quietly and unobtrusively and one of my first challenges is to identify the area in which I should make my maiden speech, which I hope to do in the next few weeks.

I’m grateful for the encouragement and support of so many friends and colleagues as I begin to invest time and energy in this ministry. Warm thanks to Bishop Bev and to all Diocesan colleagues whose hard work across the Diocese makes it possible for me to do so. Please keep me, and all the work of Parliament, in your prayers!”
