Triangle of Hope Youth Pilgrimage 2023

First published on: 26th January 2023

Triangle of Hope brings together three dioceses -Virginia (USA), Liverpool and Kumasi (Ghana), involved in the slave trade. The project is committed to learning from the past and combatting modern-day slavery and human trafficking. Each one of our Dioceses was directly involved in the dreadful Slave Triangle. We commit ourselves to learning from these memories and to ensure that the lessons are shared and embedded in our lives and in our Dioceses.

The Triangle of Hope is a covenantal community dedicated to transforming the long history, ongoing effects, and continuing presence of slavery in our world through repentance, reconciliation, and mission. thetriangleofhope.com

Rebecca Richardson, Triangle of Hope Lead for the Liverpool Pilgrims

In 2019 Rebecca spoke to the Diocese about her role as Huyton Deanery Schools and Youth Worker and the Triangle of Hope Youth Pilgrimage and how this journey has shaped who she is today.

Rebecca explains why going on the Youth Pilgrimage herself changed her life:  "Growing in my own Christian faith is central to my life and I understand how important it is to provide this opportunity from a young age, as the opportunities given to me at a young age were instrumental in my own journey of faith. So for me, this changed my life, the opportunity of a lifetime to grow with other young people of Christian Faith, grow in confidence, to develop your faith further, and build friendships and connections with young people across the Diocese. Experience new challenges, overcome fears, learn new skills and create friendships with others of a similar age from a range of churches and backgrounds."

Liverpool, Virginia, Kumasi Youth Pilgrimage 2023

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we had to postpone the Pilgrimage Journey which was due to begin in 2019. I know this came with great sadness to many as we started to recruit and begin this journey together. We did however continue to journey together in prayer and staying connected with our link Diocese in Virginia and in Kumasi, Ghana.

We are now excited to share that the Triangle of Hope Youth Pilgrimage 2023 is ready to recruit young people aged 14-18 years to embark on this journey together.

A Youth Pilgrimage takes place on a rolling basis and runs for 2 years, in this case, 3 years with our Triangle of Hope link with Kumasi, Ghana. Youth learn together, pray together, forge lasting relationships, take part in community service together and visit each other’s settings. The purpose of the Pilgrimage is to nurture your personal development and grow and connect your faith both to history and today’s world.

Youth Pilgrimage 2023 will begin in March this year. It is open to all young people ages 14 years – 18 years right across the Diocese. This will be the starting point of your journey where you will be able to meet regularly with other young people to build friendships, take part in teambuilding exercises and make connections through the Triangle of Hope.

This will then lead to a Teambuilding weekend away. This is an amazing opportunity to experience new challenges, overcome fears, learn new skills, create friendships with others and grow in faith with one another praying for the future and opportunities ahead of us.

We will then connect with young people in our Triangle of Hope link with the Diocese of Virginia and the Diocese of Kumasi, Ghana. Pilgrims learn about our historic slave trading links and challenge the many contemporary forms of slavery which exist today.

We will then begin to look at fundraising ideas and how we can fund all of the young people to begin this journey to Virginia and Kumasi and also the link with them traveling to Liverpool.

The dates of the Triangle of Hope Journey start in Liverpool in 2023 when a group of young people from both Virginia and Kumasi travel to Liverpool. In 2024, the group of young people from Liverpool and Kumasi will travel to Virginia. Then in 2025, the group of young people from Liverpool and Virginia will travel to Ghana.
