Join Bishop John with the Summer Reading Challenge

“For our summer reading challenge this year, I have invited you to join me in reading the whole Bible. Thank you to those of you who have accepted the challenge. It may seem a big ask to read the whole Bible in six weeks but I want to assure you that it is a doable and enjoyable task.

This is about reading a story. Most of us love reading stories. We often forget that the Bible tells us one big story of God creating the world, sustaining it, and redeeming it. On the other hand, it is also the one big story of us, the people of God, chosen by God to be his agents and partners in his creating and redeeming work.

So the invitation is to read the Bible as a story without being stuck with textual and theological details. You might want to go back to something you read and in that case, I suggest you make a note of it so that you can explore it later on.  It is expected that you will skim over some of the parts quickly – as long as you get the overall sense of the story.

I will provide a general outline and introduction to the part of the story we are reading every week. This will involve briefly the outline story and the themes that dominate the particular section of the story we are reading that week. I hope, if you put together those six introductions together, you will have a working background document for your further study.

Happy reading!”
