An alternative to trick or treating

Churches in St Helens are teaming up with their local primary schools to invite children to 'Light Night' parties on 31st October. The events will serve a dual purpose of Celebrating All Saints Eve and the borough of St Helens' 150th Anniversary.

Rev'd Sonya Doragh said, "We are delighted that the Light Night leaflet is going to tell the Good News to thousands of St Helen's children that Jesus is the Light of the world and that Jesus loves them. The goody bag with the leaflet is full of items branded with the slogan 'shine your light' - to encourage the children that they too can make a difference in the world.

This initiative is linked to the 150th anniversary of St Helens and celebrates the fact that St Helen is remembered thanks to her faith in Jesus, light of the world.

I will be doing an assembly on 31st October in our local primary school and talking about how Jesus brings His light and love into even the darkest of situations.  Every child will take a goody bag home and we are praying that this will be a part of their journey to accepting Jesus as the light of their lives.

The churches that are giving out bags are holding Light Night parties, some for the first time.  Serving families in the community and having great fun too. We don't have a usable church hall at the moment so I have invited all of Year 2 (my youngest son's year group) to the vicarage - I love a good party!  Hoping that some of those that come will consider joining our after school congregation for Bible story and snacks so this helps grow a Bigger Church."

The Light Night party packs that will be given to each child will include, a booklet that links the good news of the Gospel with All Hallow’s Eve and with St Helens, a torch with the logo and Shine a light text, a luminous wrist band, with ‘shine a light’ and the logo, a glow stick and an invitation to the Light Night party.
