As employers, churches - and the people who oversee them - have a duty to the people they employ. The employment of staff and voluntary workers can fall into a legal minefield and this can deter some parishes from looking to employ staff.
The diocese can help in two ways.
We have a Human Resources Adviser, Liz Geddes, who can advise parishes
and projects on employment issues. If you need advice then feel free to contact her.
Meanwhile Liverpool, Chester and Manchester Dioceses, on behalf of the Church Urban Fund, have produced a guide to employing workers called, Just Employment. The guide contains information on many aspects of employment; recruitment; documentation; pay and reward systems; performance management; dismissal and redundancy policies; volunteers and health and safety.
The guide gives useful contact details and has a range of templates than can be used in the local circumstance. These incluce sample job descriptions; person specifications and contracts of employment.
The guide can be downloaded here
