Church Mosque Twinning

First published on: 1st April 2019

This builds on the national Church Mosque Twinning programme organised by the Christian Muslim Forum. Following a conference with over a hundred others at Lambeth Palace on 25th March, members of the Council of Faiths are really excited about how these Twinnings could strengthen our community spirit.

Afthkar Quayyam, Chair of the Council of Faiths, found the range of success stories around the country truly inspiring, adding “This work is crucial given the rise of populism, intolerance and hate crime leading us towards more isolated and divisive neighbourhoods. Creating Safe Spaces for difficult conversations between friends is so important. The conference was a wonderful opportunity to see the impact of ordinary people working tirelessly to build bridges and promote stronger communities.”

Richard Bennett, from the Council of Faiths and part of the new Transform North West church believes it is absolutely critical for Christians to befriend our Muslim neighbours, not to mention people of other faiths and no faith - “we get to meet new friends whilst enriching our own faith - so what’s to lose? After events in Christchurch it is time for all people of faith to stand together in solidarity for peace. New Zealand is a long way off, but demonstrates that minority groups can be vulnerable even in apparently safe places like Warrington.”

Joining a Twinning arrangement does mean moving out of your comfort zone, and does involve some challenges, which is why it’s good to be part of a wider national movement sharing good practice from places like Rochdale, Bradford, Lincoln and Birmingham.

So the Council of Faiths is calling for interested Churches to get in touch if ready to join in. Please contact Richard Bennet from Transform North West - Richard.bennett@transformnorthwest.org.uk
