Church Commissioners Car Loan Scheme

Making It Easier > Making it easier to... > Serve as clergy > Car Loan Scheme

The Church Commissioners operate a national car loan scheme for serving clergy, deacons and licensed lay workers who are currently paid via the central clergy payroll. Car loans are not available to retired clergy.

How to apply for a car loan
  • Please complete the application form and return it to St James’ House for the attention of Pauline Rowe. Download the application form from the Church Commissioners website.
  • The Church Commissioners will make a monthly deduction direct from your stipend.
  • If you already have an existing loan, this must be cleared before a new loan is granted. This can be done through the Church Commissioners by completing section 3 of the application form. Your current balance can be found on your most recent pay statement.
If you are purchasing a used car:
  • For a car less than four years old, the Church Commissioners require a HPI report. This should be enclosed with your application form.
  • For a car over four years old a HPI report and an independent engineer’s report will be required. The Church Commissioners will make a decision upon these reports. You may be granted a loan repayable over a shorter period.
  • A cheque may be made payable to you or the garage (see section 3). It will be sent directly to you from the Church Commissioners and should take approximately five or six days. Alternatively, a BACS payment can be made direct to the account that your stipend is paid into.
