A Cross in the Window

First published on: 2nd April 2020

As many will miss the blessing and distribution of Palm Crosses on Sunday, we’re joining dioceses across the country in a campaign, to encourage as many people as possible to make a cross on Palm Sunday and place it in a window of their home.

Bishop Paul said,
"Traditionally Holy Week and Easter is a time when we walk together through the streets to show witness to our faith, often ecumenically. This year is very different but while we can’t walk together we can still witness together. So I will be putting my cross in the window of Bishop’s Lodge as a token of my faith in Jesus who died on the Cross for us all, and rose again. I do encourage you to do the same. Let’s together put a cross in the window and show the world the hope that we have in our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ!"

As part of a national service he will lead for Palm Sunday, marking the start of Holy Week and Easter, the Bishop of Manchester, David Walker, will put a paper ‘palm’ cross in the window of his Salford home.

The Holy Communion service will be broadcast at 9 am on the Church of England’s Facebook page and Church of England website, with readings from the Archdeacon of Manchester, Karen Lund and prayers by Lucy Hargraves from St Peter’s Church in Bolton. All three record contributions from their own homes in keeping with the rules on physical distancing.

During the national virtual church service for Palm Sunday to be broadcast by the Church of England, as Christians, we are encouraged to make our own paper or card ‘palm’ crosses.

Displaying a cross is a sign to people passing by that in the saving work of Christ there is healing, life and salvation.

Initially, the cross could be simple and fairly plain, made of paper, card, wood – you can be as imaginative as you like. Then, when Easter comes you may like to decorate it with colours, flowers etc as a sign of our trust in the joy of the resurrection.
