Mother’s Union in the Diocese of Liverpool has 97 branches and approaching 3,000 members. Are you aware that men and women can join if they support MU’s aims and ethos.
Membership is spread across 78 countries and there are in excess of 3.5 million members. In many parts of the world MU is a vibrant source for the emancipation of women, developing small businesses, teaching basic child care and nurturing families in the Christian faith.
Mary Sumner, the founder of Mothers' Union and herself a mother of three, was all too aware of the burdens and responsibilities of parenting; of the feelings of inadequacy that could swamp young mothers, so in 1876 she took steps to form a society for the support of women in their role as mothers. In 1896: The Central Council of Mothers' Union was formed - agreed objectives were that marriage, parenting and prayer were key to the future of families.
From 1900 branches were established not just in England but worldwide, growing so that the MU became not just the largest Anglican organisations but one of the largest Christian organisations worldwide.
Involvement and skilled input to the Commission on the Status of Women at the United Nations, literacy programmes in Africa, Away From It All holidays, membership of the Jubilee Debt Campaign and the End Child Poverty coalition all highlight the concern that members continue to feel for disadvantaged families.
In the Diocese the President of our Mothers’ Union is June Houghton from Fazakerley and the Secretary is Pauline Lewis.
Holidays for needy families, supporting MU projects internationally, supplying toiletries for homeless people, being at the forefront of Ecumenical work through MU's links with the Union of Catholic Mothers, the Methodist Network and the Salvation Army - these are among the many activities that MU undertakes – it is one of the strongest volunteer led organisations in the Country.
