Bishop Richard Blackburn is the Bishop Suffragan, the Bishop of Warrington. He was consecrated in November 2009.

Bishop Richard assists the Bishop of Liverpool in the episcopal leadership of our diocese. He chairs the Diocesan Board of Education.

Richard was born in Denmark and grew up in Yorkshire.

Before ordination, Richard read Theology at St. John’s College, Durham where he was elected President of the Durham Union. After university he worked for the National Westminster Bank in London where he captained the Nat West Rowing Club in his spare time. He married Helen in 1980 and after a year living in Putney moved to Cambridge to train for the ministry at Westcott House.

Richard served his curacy at St Dunstan’s Stepney, followed by five and a half years as Priest in Charge of St John’s, Isleworth. He became Vicar of St Mark’s, Mosborough in the Diocese of Sheffield from 1992-1999. He served as Area Dean of Attercliffe from 1996-1999 and was made an honorary Canon of Sheffield Cathedral in 1998. In 1999 he was appointed Archdeacon of Sheffield and Rotherham. He served on General Synod for five years from 2000. He was a Residentiary Canon of Sheffield Cathedral until 2005 when he was elected Chair of the Churches Regional Commission for Yorkshire and the Humber. He is currently Vice Chairman of the Church of England Pensions Board. Among his many responsibilities in the Diocese, Richard chairs the Board of Whirlow Grange Ltd. (the Retreat and Spirituality Centre) since it became an independent company.

Richard is married to Helen, a musician (a viola player) and teacher and for the last ten years ordained. She served as a curate at Sheffield Cathedral and as a Hospital Chaplain for five years. She was Chaplain to the Willowbrook Hospice in our diocese before being appointed Team Rector of the East Widnes Team where she currently serves. They have four children Charlotte, Emma, Robert and Isabelle, all in their 20’s.

Interests
Richard and Helen are keen walkers, they love music and the theatre and regularly attend concerts, opera and plays. Richard plays squash and would row if he could find the time.
