Bishop John calls for immediate ceasefire in Gaza

First published on: 3rd May 2024

I join with millions of concerned citizens all around the world in calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. The relentless bombardment of Gaza cannot be morally justified; nor can it be seen acceptable in the light of international law. No nation should be able to kill thousands of innocent civilians, mostly children and women, in the name of self-defence.

This war seems to consolidate a system of occupation that has for too long denied Palestinians their rights and freedoms. Palestinians need to have access to food, water, healthcare, and safety.

Other nations in the world, especially the leading powers in the West, need to act swiftly to end this war. They need to stop arming Israel while it carries on this inhuman violent assault on the people in Gaza, and work towards a lasting solution to the conflict in the region by establishing a sovereign state of Palestine.

I offer my prayers for those who suffer in this conflict and for all those who are in solidarity with them. It will be one of the greatest moral failures of the humanity in this century if we just remain silent onlookers.

The Rt Revd Dr John Perumbalath

Bishop of Liverpool
